MINUTES OF THE MEETING ON NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT TRAJECTORY

Peace be to you.
The purpose of minute taking is to record action plans agreed to be implemented. Minutes helps explain to us, people responsible for certain actions to be executed within a given time frame. It equally provides details of agreed action plan to those who were not present to enable them know how certain decisions were arrived at.
At what meeting, did we agree to live as one entity called Nigeria? Who presided over that meeting? Who were those in attendance of the said meeting?
To answer the following question lets go through the agenda for the day. We are aware that
• The president jetted out of the country because he does not believe in the medical institutions of the country he rules.
• All policy documents geared towards moving Nigeria out of poverty has exacerbated poverty and displacement of the people.eg removing subsidy without having a working refinery.
• Workers are no longer paid salaries in many states of the federation as their governors have become emperors.
• Fulani herdsmen keep murdering people in the name of cattle grazing and the government keep forming committees and speaking English.
• The military high command issued a stern warning to her members to resist the lure of coup plotting. We are all aware that it was their stock in trade before 1999.
• That many families in Nigeria can no longer feed themselves and are therefore resorting to selling their children or committing suicide.
• That we no longer have a virile opposition, hence moving towards tyrannical rule.
• That we no longer have a strong labour body in Nigeria. The Nigeria labour Congress(NLC) has been decimated by divide and rule tactics.
• That people are detained unjustly, even when judicial pronouncements have been made for them to be released.
• That more ammunition are imported in to the country because of the prevalence of the education of war rather than peace.
• The rise of Boko Haram terrorist organization is a sad story for our democratic transition.However, Michael Waizer advised us that ‘wherever we see terrorism, we should look for tyranny and oppression’
• That instrument of destruction is more than instruments that necessitates productive living.
• That all probes about contract awards, contract inflation and sharing of booties always come to nullity because nothing comes out from those probes. Be it Malabu oil deal or Halliburton contract.
• That a governor said that the reason why meningitis killed some people in his state is because of their sins. Oh God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are you listening.
• That the electricity problem has not improved after billions of dollars has been invested.
Ray Ekpu raised a point of order in his article in Newswatch Magazine of August 25,1986 ,he posited that ‘the story of government of Nigeria is largely the story of contract awards and the story of contracts awards is largely the story of corruption’.
We are celebrating 18 years of democratic transition today. Before the government comes out to reel out their achievements, I want to remind them that famine is already in Nigeria and as we all know, a hungry man cannot think and reason and will continue to suffer amnesia and hallucination.
Richard Weaver advised all that ‘the trouble with humanity is that it forgets to read the minute of the last meeting’ and the minute so far explains that Nigeria in its present form is not meant to work until we negotiate round a table of brotherhood on how to make it work.
